I've seen some of Alejandro Cartagena's work (although I thought I remembered a Gonzalez in there somewhere) and had a little correspondence with him. He is unveiling the eyes of this gringo about a Mexico I never imagined existent. I suppose if it is a failing, photography does beautify whatever it isolates, as Sontag has posited and it does so in the hands of Cartagena, yet I'm struck by the cultural and I think in some way temporal juxtapositions that become aching with extended viewing.
